Taking Klonopin for anxiety
If you start suspecting anxiety the first thing you will probably do is research your symptoms. But this is where anxiety strikes really hard, because it tends to mock the symptoms of many other diseases.
First thing you should do is go to a doctor and consult about your symptoms. If it's really anxiety he or she will prescribe you with special anti-anxiety drugs. You have probably heard nasty stories about such drugs, and the negative sites all over the Internet do their dirty job too. If you really want your treatment to be effective, you should avoid such stories because they will act like a placebo and will do you only harm no matter how good your prescribed medication is.
Then your doctor will probably try different types of anti-anxiety medications to see how effective they are in your case. And it is most probably that at a certain point you will take Klonopin. Unlike other drugs it takes about two weeks for you to feel its effects, so don't be discouraged if you don't observe any results when you start taking the drug. It is only because the drug class that Klonopin makes part of, benzodiazepines, have to be at a certain constant level within your body to work effectively. Give it some time.
To have an effective therapeutic effect with Klonopin you usually will have to take it 2 or 3 times a day, depending on your situation. Unlike other benzodiazepines, Klonopin has a longer half-life which means it will stay in your body for longer periods of time and is less likely to develop a tolerance to the drug that forces patients to increase the dosage with time.
Remember that some people will have to take Klonopin for longer periods of time than others and this should not be a cause for discouragement. It all depends on your individual situation and how well does your body respond to the drug.
When you feel that you have overcome anxiety and think of taking an antidepressant instead, you should slowly take off Klonopin, by slowly and gradually reducing the dosage, while increasing the dosage of antidepressant at the same time. The recommended decrease of dosage is 1/8 of the initial one daily during two weeks.
